Tridacna crocea
Crocea clams are found throughout the central pacific. In the wild they live totally encased in rocks or coral where only their mantle is visible. Their shell is smooth however specimens that have grown in an aquarium and have not bored into a solid substrate have a coarser sculptured shell. Their mantle can be magnificently coloured and is one of our favorites. Sometimes the crab Xanthasa murgiera lives commensally with T. crocea. These clams are easy to keep but require a very high illumination. Metal Halide or LED lights are essential. We do not recommend only T5 or VHO lighting. Some of these clams are collected improperly and have a damaged byssal gland. This is not good so we only provide croceas that have an intact foot or are firmly attached to rock or substrate.
