Derasa

Tridacna derasa

Derasa clams are from the Indo-Pacific and are sometimes listed as an endangered species as they have become extinct from many areas. They loose their byssal threads rather early and live along the edge of barrier reefs unattached. In the aquarium they grow rather quickly and can double or triple its size within a year given the right conditions. They do best when provided plenty of nutrients and standard reef lighting. We always recommend very high illumination. Metal Halide or LED lights, but they will do well with enough T5 or VHO light. Yes, they are endangered in the wild but are one of the most widely available captive-bred giant clam and we only import the best aquacultured specimens.
