Our Reef Rock comes from the shallow warm water of the Cretaceous Great Barrier Reef. Over 100 million years ago central Texas through the southern tip of Florida was part of a great prehistoric reef, similar to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Corals grew and thrived. As a result they left behind huge deposits of skeletal carbonate aka dry reef rock. For more info on the Cretaceous Great Barrier Reef click here Cretaceous Barrier Reef. All of the live rock we sell comes form these prehistoric deposits. Marco Rocks is one of our favorite suppliers. Rock form this same prehistoric reef is also known as Deco Rock or Texas Holey Rock
We at CRE are interested in providing the best captive reefs to our customers. Live rock is one of the most important ingredients to a successful reef. Unfortunately live rock is expensive and harmful to the environment. In Fiji countless reefs are devastated by the harvesting of live rock. This rock then sits on a dock sometimes for days before it is shipped. By the time it arrives to you most of the valuable life is dead and will pollute your tank if you don’t cure it properly.
Some good rock from Fiji and Florida is handled properly and shipped to you over-night. This is without a doubt the best rock but it has its disadvantages. You still have to cure it and after shipping can cost you over $8.00 a pound. Other rock from a local fish store is often held in a separate tank. This allows ammonia from the decaying organisms to spike and kill off most of the surviving inhabitants. What you are left with it rock with some coralline algae and a few stressed copeopods. This average rock at best can cost you up to $12.00 a pound.
Our rock is washed and placed directly in our aquaculture tank This tank is tied directly to our main tank. After a few months the rock is booming with life. Our rock is free from unwanted pests and can be placed directly into your display tank. We normally recommend you use 5%-10% of high quality trans shipped live rock with our aqua cultured live rock or dry reef rock making up the rest. This of course depends on your budget and patience. If your goal is a fish only tank our rock is all you need. Our live rock has all of the beneficial bacteria come sponges and depending on demand has plenty of coralline algae. Our price is only $5.00 a pound. Min order is 50 Lbs. CMAS discounts available. Local pickup for CMAS members or reef builds only.
